Holding Tank Deodorizers

Walex TOI-91799 Porta-Pak Holding Tank Deodorizer, (Pack of 10)Check PriceEvery RV or camper that has a bathroom needs to carry holding tank deodorizers onboard.

Holding tank deodorizers come in a few varieties, including little pre-measured packets (which we prefer), a dry powder or as a liquid – both of which must be measured – which is put right down the toilet after you do a dump (empty the black water holding tank).

The holding tank deodorizer remains in the holding tank until it’s dumped the next time and diminishes any smells from material in the holding tank by rapidly breaking down toilet paper and solid waste.

Just treat the toilet with a dose of whichever holding tank deodorizer you choose after you perform each dump. Your holding tank treatment will keep your camper smelling much fresher.

Note: You can use these holding tank deodorizers for any portable toilet or waste water container (think bucket….).

Black Water Tank Cleaning

One thing to dread about owning an RV is performing the required ‘dump’ after a long camping trip. For those of you who live full time in a home, a ‘dump’ is performed every time you flush the toilet. But, for RVers, it’s a two step process.

A quick lesson in the holding tanks of RVs: There’s two waste holding tanks underneath most RVs:

  1. There’s a ‘gray water’ holding tank which holds the water used in the shower and in the sinks.
  2. There’s a ‘black water’ holding tank which holds the waste from the toilet.

So, before leaving a camp site, it’s necessary to perform a ‘dump’ which empties both tanks as there’s no reason to be carting around waste water and matter while you’re on the road.

Here’s the dilemma: solid waste, such as toilet tissue, etc, can get stuck in the black water holding tank. It’s for this reason that you’re probably going to want to make sure that the tank is well rinsed. That’s where the below items come into play.

The reverse RV flush valve products are add-ons to your normal dumping procedure. Just screw one of these onto your RV’s dump valve, add on your sewer hose, and perform the dump as you normally would – dump the black water tanks first and then the gray water (this way, the gray water mostly rinses the hose of the gunk from the black water).

With one of these flush valves added though, you can now hook up a water hose and force the water into the tanks to create extra pressure and assurance that all is clear. This is our preferred way to make sure that the tanks are not carrying extra matter after we do the dump.

Now, there’s also the toilet wands you see below which do a similar task – just hook up a water hose, put the toilet wand down the toilet and blast away.

Whichever product you decide to use to clear your campers water tanks, do it every time and you won’t have any smell at all inside the camper. Promise!

By the way, the product that we have is the Flush King – you’ll have to click that link to see it as, for some reason, I couldn’t add it directly from Amazon, but, clicking the link will take you to the exact product on Amazon.com.
